I
hadn’t
performed
really
since
May,
except a few open mics here and there. I had a few new songs that are different
than anything I’ve ever done. When we got there, I wasn’t sure what
was going to happen. It was a great room, and Jim the booker (and also minister)
asked me if I’d brought a sound system. I told him I didn’t have
one, but that the room probably didn’t need it. It felt so right. It was
going to be an all-unplugged show. I had all this frenetic energy that I get
before shows, but more intense than I’ve ever experienced. I could’ve
run a marathon on that stuff. There were a few tables with older folks, definitely
a different demographic than what I’ve usually played for, and then my
friends. Amy Petty, who blows my mind, was opening but she wasn’t there
yet. We went and got food and by the time we got back the place had really filled
up. Amy performed and just really opened my heart up…it was perfect. She
did this amazing rendition of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m
Looking For” that blew the whole room away. I got up to the stage, and
told the story of the global warming campaign this summer, and talked about Reverend
Fred Small, who taught me a few songs to use in the campaign. I asked if folks
wanted to try singing one, and they all said yes, so we sang together, it’s
called “Walk the World.” Filled the whole room, everybody was singing
and snapping their fingers. A good start! The rest of the show was just great…the
old songs felt so new and fresh because I hadn’t performed or even practiced
them in so long. They took on different forms, and it was exciting to tell the
stories again. Amy came up to sing for “Firehole,” and I almost had
an orgasm onstage. I think the only reason I didn’t is because I knew she
was counting on me to keep playing the guitar. Everyone also sang on “Next
Time Around,” a song about the new year, and it was absolutely haunting.
Amy and I did two new ones together too, “In Their Time” and “Until
the Dream.” Everyone sang along with these ones also, and it was unbelievable.
Just so much energy. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Total communion.
And it’s crazy, because my experience
as performer and theirs as audience were mutually interconnected – the
show obviously couldn’t have happened without me, but if
it were just me, it also couldn’t have happened. I’m
finally starting to live out my values in my music. I’m
realizing on a new level that original vision I had, that intention
for starting to play music, that aspiration to help people feel
that they are a part of something far larger than themselves.
I’m writing music on a more authentic level than I ever
have before. The process is different too. It’s just coming
out. And completely separate from guitar, too. Just voice. Just
melody carrying everything, melody and rhythm. I’m not
judging as it comes out. It’s been a long time in coming
too.

great nights with a fabulous audience and a good time had by all. the
part of my job i love the most is the diversity, one night a bar, the
next night a listening room at a prep school. super cool. oh, and my
good friend degan also opened up the show with an opener
placed strategically in the middle, after one of my strings broke!
